Trichotillomania (Hair-pulling)
Trichotillomania, or hair-pulling, is an impulse control disorder in which people have strong urges to pull out their hair. Even if you know that acting on these urges can be harmful, you may find it very difficult to stop. This is because hair-pulling may be an attempt to cope with stress, self-soothe, or manage boredom.
When hair-pulling goes untreated, people often face increasing consequences, including emotional distress, hair loss (including bald patches), embarrassment, shame, and avoidance of social situations. We approach treatment for trichotillomania with a compassionate, nonjudgmental approach and a focus on helping you heal.
In therapy you will learn helpful coping skills, understand the underlying causes of your hair-pulling, identify triggers, and learn how to better manage difficult emotions. We are eager to help you feel more confident about your coping and self-care.
